The breeding flock at Hedgerow Farm is made up of animals that have been selected and bred for superior genetics and performance. Emphasis is placed on breeding animals that are above average representatives of their respective breeds.
Ewes are managed on the Cornell Star breeding program, with the goal of 5 lambings per ewe in a three-year period. Complete records are kept allowing us to monitor the performance of our flock as well as the individual animals. We aggressively cull ewes that do not perform as expected and are constantly improving the genetics of our flock.
Rideau lambs are selected for above average maternal traits, while maintaining good growth characteristics. We only select ewe lambs that are born as multiples while maintaining average or better 50 and 100 day weights.
Rideau rams are selected based on superior EPDs (expected progeny difference) as well as being structurally sound in body. Rams are only kept out of proven pedigree dams, born as multiples and must exhibit above average 50 and 100 day weights.
All of our flock was originally acquired from flocks with high health status and we are currently in the process of getting certified on the Sheep Flock Health Program. We are also in the process of enrolling in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program and are testing our rams for scrapie resistance genes.
Any animal that we sell as breeding stock is a representative of our flock and if not sold would have become a member of our own flock. We guarantee all animals that are sold as breeders. Please feel free to inquire about our animals we would be happy to give you a tour of our flock.
